Grinding of solid, medium solid and soft substances are customary to distinguish according to such property of ground material as hardness.
Either crushing (performed in crushers) or milling (performed in mills) is selected depending on the average size of the ground material grains.
Basic methods of grinding and machines applied for this purpose are given below:
Grinding method | Type and size (mm) of product grains | Machines applied for solid substances | Machines applied for medium solid and soft materials |
---|---|---|---|
Extensive crushing | Large pieces of more than 50 mm | Jaw and cone crushers | Hammer crusher |
Fine crushing | Small crushed stone from 5 to 50 mm | Cone and roll crushers | Roll crusher |
Coarse grinding | "Seed" gravel from 5 to 50 mm | Hammer crusher, roll mills | Abrasion and rod mills |
Fine and ultrafine grinding | Flour, powder from 0.05 to 0.5 mm from 0.005 to 0.05 mm |
Abrasion, pin and cone mills | Abrasion, cutting and vibration mills |
Colloidal grinding | Colloidal powder less than 0.005 mm | Ball and jet mills | Ball and vibration mills (for wet milling) |
In most cases it is impossible or extremely inefficient to grind large pieces of material into flour at once in one unit, therefore often several grinding machines are combined together to form one installation.
Since either fine or extensive fracture is formed during of one grinding stage, there is a necessity to use classifiers to distinguish the obtained product fractures depending on their size.
As a considerably strong dust formation takes place during grinding, all grinding machines and all haulage ways from them are performed according to the closed system type. The air coming from this system shall be cleaned in filters and cyclones.
Crushers are the most appropriate machines for coarse grinding of large pieces of material. Pieces in such units can be ground to the size of 5 mm.
The jaw crusher acquired its name since it contains two so-called jaws one on which is stationary and the other one performs back-and-forth motion thereby alternately reducing or increasing the clearance between the jaws.
Large pieces of the ground material are crushed into finer pieces when the moving jaw comes closer to the stationary jaw falling into the operation space between the jaws under compression load. Already crushed pieces of material fall downwards and the larger pieces located higher are moved to the vacant position and crushed again during the next approximation of the moving jaw during the dissipation of the moving jaw from the stationary one. Large-sized material enters the crusher from the top and slips into the space between the two jaws. Adjusting the width of the gap between the jaws and frequency of their approximation it is possible to thereby change the size of material grains and consumption of the ground product.
Jaw crushers are considered to be universal machines for preliminary material crushing. Grinding in such units is performed due to crushing of the loaded material by operation surfaces of the crusher, which are called jaws (one stationary and the other moving, mounted on the rod). The ground product falls out of the jaw machine at the moment of the reverse operation of the moving operation part (jaw).
The moving jaw in the jaw crusher gets close to the stationary one and moves away from it at regular intervals. Depending on the method of strengthening of the moving operation surface (jaw) these crushers can be as follows:
Let us consider the design of the jaw crusher on the example of the crusher with the largest span in spalt. All parts and elements of the crusher are located inside the massive cast iron frame fastened to the solid brick or concrete foundation. In large machines the frame is usually demountable and made of cast steel or thick (from 25 to 50 mm) steel plates by means of welding. Crushing of bulk material takes place in the operating space of the machine, between its moving and stationary jaws. The jaws (moving and stationary) and sidewalls of operating space of the machine are protected by means of removable ribbed plates of special steel. The moving jaw of the crusher hung on the stationary axis begins to oscillate due to the eccentric shaft and rod, which is hinged to this jaw by means of the levers (spacing plates) and adjusting wedges. The width of the outlet slit which determines the degree of material grinding is adjusted with the help of wedges by moving them. Location of wedges is changed with the help of the bolts provided for this purpose. Tension in the moving system is created due to the thrust and springs which also provide reverse motion of the moving jaw.
Grinding of pieces of material takes place during rod lifting when the moving jaw of the crusher approximates the stationary one. When the rod is lowered, the slit of the crusher opens and ground material falls out of the operating space. The rod of the machine and its spacing plates form the base of the jaw machine design - a crank lever, which allows reaching huge pressure.
Crushers of this type are characterized by the size of the charging and discharge ports. Jaws are the most wearing parts of these machines, therefore they are produced from wear-resistant materials and are removable. Metal for the jaws is selected depending on the nature of the ground material. The crusher jaws are produced form the chilled (partial) cast iron to grind softer materials and from steel (chrome or manganic) – to grind solid materials.
The crusher jaws surface can be either ribbed or smooth. Ribbed jaws are applied during extensive crushing and for solid materials, and smooth ones - during fine grinding and for brittle material.
The levers operating on compression (support plates) are usually steel or chilled cast iron at the ends. Section of one of the levers is made to break down in case of a very solid material accidentally enters the machine, for example, a piece of metal, i.e. it is a kind of fuse.
Jaw crushers are distinguished by robust design and are easy to clean. Their advantages can also include opening of the discharge slit to unload material during reverse motion of the moving jaw, comparative compactness of the installation and ability to quickly change wear parts.
Jaw crushers manufacturing today produces a wide variety of types and size of the machine beginning with the most compact laboratory units sized 150 per 100 millimeters and ending with sufficiently large machines with the size of the charging port of 2,100 per 3,000 millimeters. The latter are able to crush considerably large pieces of materials the volume of which comprises from 1 to 2 cubic meters. The performance of such machines comprises to 2.5 thousand tons per hour with drive capacity up to 400 kilowatts.
Today, jaw crushers are widely used for extensive crushing of different solid materials.
The crusher design having the largest span in the charging port (throat). Moving jaw in this crusher is represented in the form of the massive lever, which sways near the lower axis. Long arm of this lever (moving jaw) is connected to the eccentric shaft with the help of the rod.
The machine slit is adjusted with the help of the twin bolts, which help to move the lower axis bearings located in the special guide frame.
Since the largest span of the moving jaw in this machine occurs not at the discharge port but in the throat, the width of the discharge slit during the whole operation process does not change, i.e. that it remains unchanged and the discharged ground material form the crusher is more homogeneous in terms of the pieces size. However, the accumulated ground material in the lower part can clog it and namely this is the main disadvantage of this crusher.
The machines of this type are mainly used for preliminary crushing of not very solid materials.
