Overview: positive displacement compressors

The compressor is a machine that increases the gas pressure and then supplies it for use in various applications including those associated with combustion, pneumatics, cooling and gas transportation processes. The main purpose of a compressor is to increase the gas pressure to such a value that it will be possible to use it in the relevant process.

The positive displacement compressor compresses the medium in the working chambers, the volume of which increases and decreases under compression causing the pressure change. The pressure changes due to periodic changes in volume of the chambers during the operation of the compressor. When the volume decreases, the pressure increases. Positive displacement compressors operate with constant performance and, depending on the structural shapes of the working parts and on how the volume of the working chambers changes, they can be of rotary or reciprocating type.

The assembled operating unit can be replaced in compressors with high performance and a pressure exceeding 5bar. The stators are not recoverable (their grinding is not possible). The vanes only cannot be replaced without the stator. The air quality and the operation mode determine the service life of the compressor. In case of irregular operation, the service life of the operating unit equals approximately to 25,000 hours. However, the longer the unit is in operation, the longer its service life due to the uniform distribution of the lubricant in the working parts.

General description and types

Positive displacement compressors include compressors of the following types:

In positive displacement compressors, the pressure is increased by holding a certain amount of gas, and converting it into a smaller volume. The most common types of positive displacement compressors are reciprocating and screw compressors.

Main gas pipelines, petrochemical plants, refineries and other industries and areas of application depend on this type of equipment. Due to many factors including, but not limited to, the quality of the original designs, adequacy of maintenance and operating performance, industrial enterprises can face significantly various expenses for the service life extension and reliability of their own units.

Different compressors can be found in almost every industrial application. Positive displacement compressors can pump the following gases:

Inert gases Hydrocarbons Reactive gases
nitrogen methane oxygen
hydrogen ethane hydrogen chloride
helium propane hydrogen sulfide
carbon monoxide butane nitrous oxide, etc.
carbon dioxide propylene
ammonia butylene
air natural gas, etc.

Reciprocating compressors are typically used where there is need for a high degree of compression per stage (degree of the discharge relative to the suction pressure) without high performance, and the process medium is relatively dry.

Rotary compressors have a simple design and lightweight; they differ in shape of the rotor and are used in many industries.

The principle of operation of positive displacement compressors, layout

Positive displacement compressors have a similar principle of operation and a similar loss mechanism. However, the relative value of various losses may vary from type to type. For example, the loss due to leakage can be small in the oil-filled industrial compressor with reliable piston rings, but may be significant in the dry screw compressor, if it operates at low speed and the pressure increases.

All types of compressors have a compression chamber, where the gas is disposed at a discharge pressure at the end of the discharge process. For some design types, this volume may be small, for others it may be substantial. Some types of compressors, such as reciprocating compressors, may have a large compression space, however, the gas returns to the suction pressure in the cylinder. In the screw compressor, the gas expands to the suction pressure in the compression space.

Some types of compressors that use fixed discharge outlets are designed to operate with a specific volume value.

Let us consider the principle of operation and the design of positive displacement compressors in more detail by the example of the reciprocating compressor and the screw compressor.

Rotary type compressors are compact and require little maintenance during their operation. Rotary compressors have a high-pressure housing. The suction in these compressors takes place directly in the compression chamber. The gas compressed in the chamber is discharged into the compressor housing. It should be noted that in case of a cold start, compressors with a high-pressure casing require more time to reach their normal operating pressure in the compressor housing. This is partly due to a large volume of the compressor casing.

Rotary screw compressors are positive displacement compressors that use screw-shaped rotors to compress gases. The main components are the inlet and outlet, and the main and auxiliary rotor. When the screw rotor slots go past the gas inlet, the gas enters the slots. The gas is held there, forming a gas pocket across the slot length. Once the main and auxiliary rotors engage, the gas pocket volume decreases and the gas held therein compresses. When the slot reaches the discharge, the gas is released.

Reciprocating compressors are positive displacement compressors that use the motion of the piston inside the cylinder to move the gas from one level of pressure to another higher level of pressure. The compressor cylinders, also called stages, which the compressor may have in the amount from one to six and more, represent limiting regulators for the process gas during compression. More stages are used to achieve a higher gas pressure. These compressors can be of single or double action. In double-action compressors, the gas compresses on both sides of the piston. Some double-action cylinders in high-pressure applications have the piston rod on both sides of the piston to ensure uniform and balanced loads. Designs with tandem cylinders help to minimize dynamic loads through the arrangement of cylinders in pairs connected to the common crankshaft, so that the motions of the pistons are opposite to each other. The wear of expensive parts is minimal. Compressors with a single cylinder are classified as either vertical or horizontal.

Application of positive displacement compressors

Positive displacement compressors are widely used for industrial processes that require the compression of air, process gases and refrigerants. You may find positive displacement compressors in the chemical industry, agriculture, electronics, metallurgy, food industry, pharmaceutical industry, pneumatic conveyor systems, etc.

Positive displacement compressors are used both in the production of gas and vapor recovery, when actuating media require transportation. Compressors of this type are used for applications where the conditions for the process gases and the gas composition can vary. In this case, oil-free screw compressors are most commonly used. Screw compressors are also a good choice, if you need cost-effective operation. They can easily treat gases containing impurities, liquefied gas, and fuel gas.

Large multi-cylinder multi-stage reciprocating compressors - one more type of positive displacement compressors - are used to produce low-pressure air, move natural gas, supply high-pressure gas during drilling, as well as for various applications in the production or chemical processes that require medium-pressure or high-pressure air. These compressors can be used at the fields and have a remote control, or at the inlet of gas plants compressing wet, moist (with water or hydrocarbon content) and, possibly, acid (with hydrogen sulphide content) natural gas. These compressors are also installed at the discharge end of gas plants compressing completely clean and dry gas for consumers and supplying it to the main pipe.

Advantages and disadvantages

Main advantages and disadvantages of positive displacement compressors are shown in the table below.

Positive displacement compressors Disadvantages Advantages
Reciprocating compressors
  • Require massive foundation
  • Flow pulsation
  • High operating costs
  • Wide pressure range
  • High efficiency
  • Low initial costs
Rotary compressors
  • Expensive
  • Relatively short service life
  • Wide range of applications
  • High efficiency
  • High compression ratio
  • Easy installation
  • Multiple moving parts

Reciprocating compressors are typically inexpensive, but their performance decreases with time, the noise level is high and the quality of the medium can be low due to the oil contained in the compressor.

Positive displacement compressors represent a class of high-performance industrial machines used in many industries. Now, the manufacturers are constantly working to improve the design and compressing features of these compressors.
