Main units (plasticization unit, clamping unit, ejection unit)

The structure of an injection molding machine (IMM) includes a welded steel frame where seven main units and assemblies of the injection molding machine are installed.

The plasticization unit consists of:

  • Barrel with the reciprocating screw;
  • Hopper;
  • Hydraulic injection cylinders;
  • Hydraulic motors.

Hydraulic cylinders move the plasticization unit. These cylinders are installed between the stationary plate of the clamping unit and the plasticization unit.

The clamping unit consists of:

  • Stationary and moveable plates;
  • Clamping levers;
  • Clamping hydraulic cylinders.

The ejection unit is mounted on the moveable plate of the clamping unit and consists of:

  • Ejector hydraulic cylinder;
  • Guides.

The position sensors and digital measuring scale control the movement of these three units.

The unit for adjustment of the die mold’s height is installed on the rear plate of the clamping unit and consists of:

  • Hydraulic motor;
  • Gear cluster.

The IMM’s control panel is equipped with an integrated computer and located on the stationary plate of the clamping unit.

The hydraulic assembly is located inside the IMM’s frame and consists of:

  • Main electric motor with hydraulic pump;
  • Hydraulic valves system;
  • Piping system;
  • Hoses;

Moreover, the construction of the IMM is equipped with a mechanical safety system; the work area is enclosed by stationary and moveable doors.

Operation principle of an injection molding machine

The principle of the injection molding machine operation is simple. The raw material to be processed is placed into the hopper of the plasticization unit. Then it is fed into the heating barrel. Rotation of the reciprocating screw of the heating barrel exerts frictional forces. The raw material heats and gets plasticized under these forces and external heating. Then this homogenous compound is fed into the cavity in front of the reciprocating screw. When the required quantity of the molten compound is acquired, it is injected into the mold. Afterwards, the finished product is removed from the mold and the cycle repeats.

The injection molding machine is able to operate in the following modes:

  • Manual (the end positions of movable units and the mold height can be adjusted, operations are performed by pressing the button);
  • Semiautomatic (execution of a single operating cycle of the injection molding machine. To perform a new cycle, it is necessary to open and close the movable door of the protection enclosure);
  • Automatic mode with a photocell (cycles are performed one after another. When the finished product falls between the photocells, they generate a start signal for the next cycle);
  • Automatic mode with timer (operation cycles are performed automatically. The start signal for the next cycle is sent after a time delay between cycles runs out).

Injection molding machine can be equipped with the following options:

  • A pneumatic system removal of the product out of a mold. This system allows removing the products out of moveable and stationary parts of the mold during production. The computer controls and adjusts operation of this system.
  • A hydraulic system for moving mold inserts. This system moves mold inserts by hydraulic cylinders, which are driven by the IMM’s hydraulic system. The computer controls and adjusts operation of this system.
  • A robot, which removes products out of the mold.
  • A heating barrel. Specifications depend on the basic configuration.
