What is a plate-type heat exchanger?

A plate-type heat exchanger is intended for heat transfer between different media, wherein both steam-liquid and liquid-liquid can serve as pairs of operating media.

Thin stamped corrugated plates serve as heat transfer surfaces.

Heat transfer mediums flow in a heat exchanger between adjacent plates, through close-clearance ducts of sophisticated shape. Ducts for heat transfer medium, releasing and accepting heat, alternate one after another.

Thin corrugated plates have low thermal resistance and, besides, provide for turbulence of heat transfer medium’s flow; as a result, this type of heat exchangers demonstrates high effectiveness of heat transfer.

Rubber seals placed along the plate ensure tightness of ducts where heat transfer medium flows.

One of these seals envelopes two holes at the plate’s angles; the heat transfer medium flows through these holes to enter the duct between plates and to leave it. The flow of heat transfer medium, running in the opposite direction, transits through two holes; these holes are additionally insulated with ring seals. Tightness of ducts is ensured by double sealing around inlet and outlet holes. If the seal is damaged, the heat transfer medium flows outwards through special grooves (depicted by arrows on the figure). This helps to visually detect tightness breaks and quickly replace the seal.

In assembled heat exchanger, plates are bolted to the specified size; here, sealing rubber gaskets form systems of tightened ducts isolated from each other, for a heat transfer medium used for heating and for that to be heated. Each subsequent plate is turned by 180° relative to the previous one; this creates conditions for turbulent liquid flow to improve heat exchange effectiveness and, at the same time, serves to ensure rigidity of the pack of plates.

Each ductwork between plates is connected with its respective manifold and provided with own points for inlet and outlet of a heat transfer medium on a fixed plate. A pack of plates is fastened to a heat exchanger frame.

Configuration of the heat exchanger frame: fixed panel, movable plate, rack, top and bottom guides, coupling bolts.

During assembling, the guides – the top and bottom ones – are initially fastened on a rack and a fixed plate . Then, a pack of plates followed by a movable plate are put on the guides. A movable plate and a fixed one are coupled by bolts.

Single-pass heat exchangers are designed in such a way that the connecting pipes are located on a fixed panel. To fasten a heat exchanger on building structures or process-related structures, mounting anvils are available on a rack and a fixed panel.

Drawing and flow diagram. Description

A plate-type heat exchanger mounted and prepared for operation is characterized by small dimensions and high performance. For example, the specific operating surface for such a device can be up to 1500 m2/m3. The design of these devices includes a set of corrugated plates separated from each other by gaskets. The gaskets form tight ducts. The medium that releases heat flows in the space between cavities, and the medium that absorbs heat flows within cavities, or vice versa. Plates are mounted on a rod frame and placed closely to each other.

Each plate is provided with the following set of gaskets:

  • a gasket along the perimeter that limits the duct for a heat transfer medium and its two inlet and outlet holes;
  • two small gaskets isolating two other holes in the corners for the second heat transfer medium duct.

So, the design includes four separate ducts for inlet and outlet of two media used in heat exchange processes. This type of devices can distribute flows throughout all ducts in parallel or in series. For example, each flow can run through all ducts or certain groups, if necessary.

The intensity of heat exchange process, small dimensions and possibility to disassemble the unit completely for cleaning are considered as advantages of this type of devices. Their disadvantage is the need for scrupulous assembling in order to preserve tightness (as a result of great number of ducts). Moreover, the drawbacks of this design include its proneness to corrosion of materials used to make gaskets and limited heat resistance.

In cases when a heated surface can be contaminated by one of heat transfer mediums, special construction units are used. The configuration of these units consists of plates welded in pairs. If contamination of a heated surface is impossible for both heat transfer mediums, welded non-demountable heat exchangers are used (for example, a heat exchanger with wave-shaped ducts and crosswise motion of heat transfer mediums).

Kinds and types of plate-type heat exchangers

Plate-type heat exchangers are subdivided into several kinds depending on their design and heat exchange plate size.

Depending on their design, heat exchangers are subdivided into:

  • single-pass;
  • two-pass with a circulation line and without such a line;
  • two-pass, made as single blocks. They are used for hot water supply systems;
  • three-pass.

Advantages of plate-type heat exchangers

Plate-type heat exchangers have the following advantages as compared with other kinds:

Reduction of area occupied by heat exchange equipment.

Heat exchanger capability to self-cleaning.

High heat transfer ratio.

Low pressure losses.

Reduction of electric power consumption.

Easy equipment repair.

Short time necessary for equipment repair.

Small underheating value.

Small dimensions

The primary factor that plays a great role in equipment arrangement and placement is its small dimensions. The dimensions of a plate-type heat exchanger are smaller than, for example, the dimensions of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger. Due to higher heat transfer ratio, smaller dimensions become possible. For example, heat transfer surface covers 99.0 – 99.8% of the total plate area.

Moreover, all connecting ports are on the heat exchanger’s fixed panel making its mounting and connection much easier. Also, a significantly smaller area is required for repair works than for repair of other types of heat exchangers.

Small underheating value

Thin layer of heat transfer medium flowing in ducts and high turbulence of heat transfer medium flow provide high heat transfer ratio. Also, due to corrugated plate surface, turbulent flow can be arranged even at relatively low speeds of heat transfer medium flow motion. Due to it, in such a case, the underheating value for design modes of operation can be as low as 1-2°C, while for shell-and-tube heat exchangers this value is 5-10°C at best.

Low pressure losses

Due to the specific feature of design of plate-type heat exchangers, their hydraulic resistance can be reduced, for example, by smooth variation of the total duct width. Moreover, maximum value of permissible hydraulic losses can be reduced by increasing the number of ducts in a heat exchanger. In turn, reduction of hydraulic resistance results in reduction of electric energy consumption for pumps.

Low time and labor consumption for heat exchanger repair

Scheduled repairs of equipment always involve assembling and disassembling works. Dismantling of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger is quite a sophisticated engineering procedure. To dismantle and remove the bundle of tubes, hoisting mechanisms must be used, and the time necessary for the disassembling procedure is quite long. For repair of a plate-type heat exchanger, no hoisting mechanisms are required. The repair can be carried out freely and quite quickly by a team consisting of 2-3 persons.

Also, heat exchange power can be smoothly varied by making the heat exchange surface larger. This feature is important when, for example, in case of production expansion, there is a need to increase heat exchange equipment power. In such cases it is sufficient to add necessary number of plates, without the complete replacement of a heat exchanger.

Scope of application

  • Water cooling at industrial thermal power stations;
  • In steel making;
  • Automobile industry;
  • In heating, water supply and ventilation systems in any buildings, demountable plate-type heat exchangers are used;
  • Plate-type heat exchangers are used in production for shower head systems
  • There are plate-type heat exchangers that are often used to preheat water in swimming pools;
  • Plate-type heat exchangers serve for cooling of liquid foodstuffs, hydraulic, transformer and engine oil;
  • Demountable plate-type heat exchangers are used for floor heating systems;
  • Heat supply for small blocks or high-rise buildings is often provided by plate-type heat exchangers.
