Bag filters. A brief overwiew

Bag filters (see Figure) present one of the most effective devices of quality treatment of gas industrial emissions and are widely used in industry. This is primarily due to the increased requirements for safety and environmental protection, as well as because of the expansion of industries, producing new filter media, made of synthetic fibers, capable of working in filters of various designs for regeneration of all sorts of ways.

Bag filter design is presented by housing, where fabric pipes (bags) are installed. The upper ends of bags are equipped with covers and are suspended at a common frame. The lower ends of bags are open and are mounted at branch pipes of a common tube sheet.

Gas treatment process is shown at the left, and backblowing of bags is shown at the right.

Polluted gas passes inside out through bags fabric. Dust particles are deposited within the fabric pores, and purified gas is discharged through an exhaust pipe. Fabric resistance increases while the layer of dust grows. Bags are regularly shaken by a special cam mechanism. There are devices which are equipped with bags blowing system. In such systems air movement direction is reversal to the purified gas movement direction. The process of blowing and shaking is carried out at intervals of 5-20 minutes and lasts for 5-20 seconds. These devices are divided into several sections, operating alternately. Switching between operating mode and cleaning mode is automatic.

Efficiency of bag filters primarily depends on the filter material.

Modern bag filters are equipped with bags of high-strength and heat resistant fabrics:

  • fabric of Orlon fiber;
  • fiberglass fabric;
  • baize with the addition of polycaproamide fibers.

Bag filters with impulse blowing

Bag filters became most common in industry because of simple design and effective operation of this type of filter mechanisms. Moreover, such filters have internal classification, based on type of material used and features of gas supply.

Bag filter design allows to provide gas filtration in multiple streams. Space between bags provides free bags inflation under the air flow force and ease of their replacement or repair.

Filter bags design may be different. Usually they are produced in the form of a fabric (integrally sewn or consisting of parts) cylinder with or without spacer bags. Upper and lower ends of filter bags are folded and hemmed in the points of clamping by clips to strengthen them.

Bag filters unit

Filters used to purify gases from dust are often produced as multiple bag filters, which are connected in parallel in a bank. Thus filtration occurs alternately in three units arranged one after another.

Filtration is produced in two of these units, and residue is discharged in the third one.

Dust-laden gas is guided into filter bags during filtration process. Dust particles from gas remain on the bag, forming a cake.

In the moment when the cake thickness reaches a maximum, gas feeding into device stops. Thereafter, air is blown into filter bag in reverse direction. And due to vibration residue it is removed from filter bags. Residue falls down, and gets into the cone, and is discharged from it into bags.

In order to completely clean filter bags, filter is switched into dust removal mode.

To qualitatively treat a continuous gas flow from dust particles, it is necessary to use a bank of three filters operating one after another. Two of filters are constantly operating, and the third one is a backup and is being shaken out during the first two filters operation.

Like during suspensions separation, gas purification from suspended particles by filtration method is used in the case where the separation by settling in cyclone separators and settling chambers is not possible. The principle of operation of devices for gas purification by filtration method is similar to the action of devices for suspensions separation. Porous membranes, permeable for gas, but retaining solid particles at their surface, are used in such devices.

Filter membranes for gases purification

Filter membranes for gases purification are divided into four main groups:

  • Granular membranes (made up of layers of sand, gravel and coke).
  • Flexible membranes (composed of fabrics and nonwovens materials of synthetic and natural fibers).
  • Rigid membranes (composed of ceramics, plastics and metal powders).
  • Semi-rigid membranes (composed of wire cloth, chips and layers of fibers).

Flexible membranes are equipped with bag filters (Fig. A), consisting of a welded metal housing of a circular or rectangular cross section. Tube sheet with branches is located inside this housing. Ends of fiber bags with wire rings sewn into them are put onto the branches. Upper ends of bags, having hooks for suspension on the frame, are capped with covers. These hooks are welded of iron squares and metal bands. The frame has a spring support and is suspended on a rod which extends through the cover of housing.

Wherein the entire gas enters through the bottom branch pipe located beneath the tube sheet, and then enters into all bags. Gas is filtered through fabric, and dust remains on the inner surface of a bag. The purified gas is discharged through a branch pipe located in the upper housing cover. At regular intervals gas flow is stopped, and bags are shaken to remove dust from them.

During bags shaking dust falls to the cone bottom, from which it is removed by screw conveyor. In the event that filter bags are made of pile fabric, they are first shaken, and then blown by purified gas from individual branch pipe. Thus, it is possible to remove fine particles that get inside fabric.

Multichamber bag filter with mechanical shaking and backblowing

Bag filters are often made as multisection ones. These filters operate with suction or injection of gas. Fig. shows a filter in which gas is injected by fan through gas flue. Thus, a cake of dust is formed on fabric pores, and a purified air is discharged through exhaust pipe into the atmosphere.

This filter has many sections. Thus after a section is cleaned it is switched to the operating position, and the next section is switched to the cleaning mode.

The picture shows a bag filter in the lateral section. At the correct operation the degree of gas purification in such a filter can reach almost 98%.

Bags, made of wool or cotton fabric, are used to collect dust in such filters.

If gas is treated at a temperature lower than the condensation temperature, water vapor, containing in gas, moisten the fabric, whereby it becomes smeared and has a too high resistance.

Filter fabric regeneration

Regeneration (cleaning) of filter surface can be conducted in two ways. Mechanical action on the fabric surface, freeing it from dust, presents the first variant. Shaking, vibration, sound waves, abrupt change in the flow of filtered gas, etc. can be applied here. Filter backblowing with purified gas presents the second variant. Both methods are commonly used to enhance efficiency of fabric filters regeneration in filter machines.

Filter dust collection

Filter dust collection lies in the fact that the polluted gas stream passes through the filter material, and dust particles remain thereon, and gas passes therethrough.

A special thick felt or dense woven fabric is most commonly used for such a filter. These materials are able to catch dust particles having size of 0.1-100 µm.

Filter dust collection is produced irregularly, but within one working cycle.

Dust particles of a size larger than the throughput capability of the material are retained on the cleaned filter material. Dust, remaining as a result of filtration, forms a cake, eventually growing in size. This cake affects directly the quality of filtration, that is, a filter material, on which a cake is formed, retains even the particles which are smaller than material holes. Filtration quality is gradually increased, but the pressure loss increases.

It is therefore necessary to periodically remove a cake from a filter material. To do this, it is necessary to disassemble and shake the filter material. It is also possible to do it by blowing the filter material with compressed air. After a cake is removed, the filtration process can be continued.
