Chamber filter press. a brief overwiew

А chamber filter press includes filter plates with protrusions at the edges. The plates are pressed to each other to create individual chambers connected in pairs. Central holes in plates are thus forming a connecting channel for all press chambers. A suspension is injected through this very channel.

Chamber filter presses are usually classified according to the structure of the filter plate package. The following types are distinguished:

  • chamber type
    These filters are used for "simple" cleaning of suspended matter when no requirements to the quality of the cake are specified, no washing is required or when cake with high hydraulic resistance should be separated;
  • membrane type
    This design allows to improve the treatment process and to use washing, pressing out and drying of the cake. Membrane press filters are used mainly in high-tech industries where high requirements to the quality of filtrate treatment are set.
  • combined type
    These filters combine the advantages of the above types and are highly effective while maintaining a comparatively simple design and a low cost of the filter. Such filters can be used in high-tech industries; however, they are also widely used in "common" industries due to their low price.

Operating principle

The filtration process in chamber filter presses is induced by forced feeding of suspension into the group of filter plates which are tightly fitted to each other and covered with a porous cloth. Solid-phase particles are retained by the filter cloth surface while the liquid freely leaks through the cloth pores and is discharged from the filter through a special system of channels. Further, the cake accumulated on the filter plate surface is regularly removed. For this purpose, the filter is opened and the cake is cleaned off using a vibrating mechanism and scraper knives.

Thus, the operating cycle includes six operations.

  1. Forced feed of suspension when filter plates are pressed together. The suspension passes through filter cloth and is discharged into the drain port in the housing of the below plate. The drain port in the bottom plate leads to the filtrate drain.
  2. Pressing out of the cake accumulated on the cloth surface using a special rubber membrane. For this purpose, water is supplied under pressure to the membrane;
  3. Washing phase;
  4. Air-drying of the cake;
  5. Disconnecting of filter plates;
  6. Cake discharge (using a filter cloth moving mechanism).

The unit is operated automatically according to a fixed program. However, a significant change of properties of filtered suspensions is possible in industrial conditions (for example, solid phase concentration, liquid viscosity, particle-size distribution, and the degree of filter membrane contamination, etc.). Therefore, an adaptive control algorithm is implemented to correct operation.

There are different types of adaptive control systems that implement a multicycle process control algorithm. Such algorithms can provide the best (minimum cost or maximum performance) duration of all operations in the general operating cycle. In case of a qualitative change of suspension parameters at the inlet, the adaptive control system automatically generates signals to adjust duration of process operations with a focus on achievement of the optimization criterion extremum. Filter presses with an adaptive microprocessor control provide the required quality of filtration with more than 20%.growth of productivity.

Basic parameters

Depending on a particular design, chamber filters can have the following characteristics:

  • Area of filtering elements: up to 1400 m2 and more;
  • Internal volume of filtering chambers: more than 40 m3;
  • Cake working thickness: 5 to 60 mm;
  • Operating temperature range: -30 to +180 °С;
  • Inlet suspension pressure: up to 3 MPa;
  • Slurry compaction pressure: up to 6 MPa.

Application and advantages

Chamber filter presses are used for separation of fine suspended matter with solid phase fractions in the range of 6-600 kg/m3 and for filtration of suspensions which produce a dense cake with a high hydraulic resistance.

Simple design and high versatility of chamber filter presses explain their widespread use in many industries: power engineering, chemical industry, mining industry, metallurgy, medicine (pharmaceuticals), food industry, manufacture of crystal and ceramic ware, etc. They are also suited for cleaning of slime water and water treatment.

Main advantages of chamber filter presses are a large filtering surface and possible use a high pressure. This allows to filter a variety of difficult-to-filter materials. In addition, these filter presses are easy to operate and wash. Moreover, chamber filter presses can be equipped with corrosion protection and have a low cost.

Design of the automatic chamber filter press

In contrast to frame-based units, these filters have a smaller cake collection chamber. However, their maximum filtration pressure is higher; therefore, they are used for difficult-to-filter suspensions. A special clamping mechanism allows a fully automatic cake discharge. This is possible due to the vertical construction and a moving cloth for cake collection.

The design includes a set of filter plates mounted between the upper (thrust) plate and lower (pressure) plate. The lower thrust plate has a clamping mechanism which consists of a hydraulic cylinder and a locking wedge. Thrust plates are tightened with special bolts.

The filter plate consists of a housing and a frame with a rubber membrane bolted between them. A drain port with a plastic base is provided in the housing. The inner space of the plate is connected with a tube to the drain assembly bushing, and the cavity of the frame is connected to the suspension feed assembly bushing.

Filter cloth is zigzag interlayed between the filter plates on special rollers. The cloth slides on the rollers as the cake is discharged, thus separating and removing the cake on both sides of the filter. Additional cloth cleaning is performed using knives mounted on roller supports. Movement of the filter cloth is actuated by a motor and a gearbox which is connected with a belt transmission to the drive drum. A special device ensures constant cloth tension. An adjusting roller is provided to eliminate lateral cloth displacement.

The filter cloth is cleaned in a regeneration chamber. The remaining cake is removed by activator rollers, cleaning knives and a spray washing tube. The regeneration chamber starts operation during the cake discharge cycle. The wash liquid is fed to the irrigation system via the manifold and bushings formed by the corresponding cavities when the plates are pressed together. The filtrate discharge assembly is similar to the feed assembly and is located symmetrically to it (on the opposite side of the filter housing). The water supply collector is located near the left rear stay of the filter housing.

A multilayer filter press with a paper filtering element (special tape) is available as a modification of the above design. Such filters are used to clean low-concentration suspensions where further regeneration of filter membranes is nearly impossible. A paper band is used as a membrane in a multilayer press; the band is unwound from the rolls which are fixed near each filter plate. Thus, the paper band is used as a disposable filter membrane.

Chamber of the chamber filter press

The plate is covered with a sewn bag made of a b fabric, and edges of cutouts are pressed to the plate by flanges and plugs.

The filtrate passes through the filter cloth and flows down along the channel and plate walls.

Washing of the cake in such filter presses is similar to that in frame filters.

Chamber filter presses are used less frequently than frame filters. The reason is that refilling of filter cloth in such filters is more difficult. Moreover, the cake obtained by filtering is of smaller volume. Chamber filter presses are used to filter suspensions which are nonfilterable by frame filter presses due to their tendency to clog narrow channels.

It is vital for proper operation of the filter press that suspension feed pressure increases as the cake thickens. Therefore, liquids are fed not by pumps but by compressed air using a blow case. Though such supply of liquid is expensive, it is easily adjustable and any hydraulic shocks and liquid pulsations are excluded. In addition, there is no need to continuously monitor the press filter unit when liquid air is supplied. Moreover, it ensures high quality filtration of various suspensions and extremely high performance of the unit.
