Reverse Osmosis is a forced movement of a solvent through a semi-permeable membrane to produce a solution with a greater or lesser concentration. The solvent in this case passes through the membrane, leaving the solute.
One of the purposes of practical application of reverse osmosis is an increasing of solute concentration.
Reverse osmosis is a process, used to remove a wide range of salts, in order to give high-purity to water. Osmosis is a natural process, representing a flow of liquid through a semi-permeable membrane.
When separating the dissolved salts from fresh water using a basic thin semi-permeable membrane as a stretched skin, clean water passes through the membrane, trying to dilute salt solution. If salt solution is supplied into the vertical pipe, then gradually diluted solution will fill the pipe until the "osmotic pressure" during pure water passing through the membrane is the same as the pressure of the diluted solution.
The process can be reverse - hence the reverse osmosis is- in the case of higher pressure application to the salt solution. Then pure water flows in the opposite direction through the membrane during a process which can be thought of as a "filtration", when the filter lets pass only small water molecules and retains almost all other molecules. This means that water with a high content of natural salt may be purified without the need for chemical regeneration solutions such as acid or caustic soda, used in water demineralization plants. Thus, reverse osmosis is considered to be a more reliable method of pure water producing for many commercial and industrial applications. And, in addition, there is no need to stop the plant for regeneration, as is the case with the water demineralization plants.
Currently, the scope of applications expanded significantly and covers the following areas:
Water: a is a fresh water; b is a sea water; A is a forward osmosis; B is an established equilibrium; C is a reverse osmosis.
Schematic diagram of the reverse osmosis operation is based on the creation of pressure in the system by the pump. Pressure level is much higher than the osmotic pressure, allowing to pass the solvent through the semi-permeable membrane and detain dissolved substances with low molecular weight (reverse osmosis).
Compared with evaporation, crystallization, distillation methods, and others, the separation process in the case of reverse osmosis, is less energy-intensive. The system operates at in-situ temperatures, and it does not require additional heating and phase transformations. The set of cost-effective properties, i.e. energy consumption and the absence of complex hardware schemes, speaks to the fact of high efficiency of these methods of membrane separation.
The results of the reverse osmosis include:
Experience has proven that that the primary separation is not always sufficient and it is necessary to obtain a more concentrated or thoroughly cleaned solution. In this case, the so-called integrated circuits are used. The essence of it lies in the simultaneous operation of reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration, together with the other methods of separation. In the case of integrated approach further evaporation methods, ion exchange methods, and others are applied.
Reverse-osmosis desalination membrane filters have been widely used since 60-ies. Initially, such devices were only used for the desalination of sea water, but now the reverse-osmosis purifies river and waste water.
Today, reverse osmosis is already forced thermal desalination plants out of the sphere of saline water conversion. Reverse-osmosis filters excel distillation units as well due to the relatively low cost of saline water conversion processes. The largest number of such filters is located in the following countries: United States, Saudi Arabia, Japan.
Water obtained by reverse osmosis method is much cheaper than, for example, water from distillation units. This explains the high competitiveness of the reverse osmosis.
Factors that influence the reverse osmosis saline water conversion include:
Absence of phase transitions in the course of the process determines its small energy consumption. The main energy consumption during the process of saline water conversion by reverse osmosis is aimed at the concentration polarization reducing.
The efficiency of the saline water conversion process depends upon the efficiency of the membrane and water interaction, so the adoption of measures to reduce the concentration polarization is necessary. Also in the filtration process specific membrane permeability, its selectivity, total surface area and its temperature and pressure differentials are important.
The distinctive features of the plant include: the use of foreign-made reverse osmosis system, foreign-made pump, automatic control, multiple safety systems, excellent water quality, low-cost, long-term continuous operation, and problem free regeneration.
The reverse osmosis water treatment plant uses an advanced reverse osmosis technology for the removal of substances dissolved in water. During treatment, only the high-pressure pump consumes energy, and no chemicals like acids or alkalis are used. The distinctive features of the water treatment plant include a long service life, easy operation, stable water quality, low maintenance costs, no chemical pollution, etc.
“ZSR” membrane element, used in reverse osmosis water treatment plant, is a complex helical element, foreign-made by a well-known brand. A membrane element can provide a degree of demineralization of more than 99%. High-pressure pump is also foreign-made by a well-known brand. The first stage of equipment is provided with an absorbing filter with activated carbon, and with polisher. Packing of activated carbon is made of coconut shells, providing high performance and necessary protection of the membrane element. During operation of such equipment the following protection and control functions are activated, as protection from water supply interruption, stopping in the case of tanks filling with water, and monitoring of electrical conductivity. The equipment can continuously operate for a long time in an automatic mode. It can be used for direct production of pure drinking water in combination with the equipment for ozone sterilization and packaging line.
