Fabric filters. A brief overwiew

Using of grain filters is possible only when it is necessary to purify the liquid in which the solid phase content is very small, and the residue is of no value. It is recommended to use filters with fabric membranes in the case, when the amount of solids in suspension is sufficiently large, or it is planned to use a residue, or better utilization of liquid phase is required.

Fabric membranes may be made of fiber materials of a mineral, vegetable or animal origin and of metal grids. Choice of material for the filter is, primarily, based on its chemical resistance to the liquid to be filtered.

For example, materials of animal origin, as a rule, coarse woolen fabrics resist acid liquors fairly well at temperatures of up to 40-50 degrees.

Cotton materials, most commonly, belting or cotton sheeting are used if it is necessary to filter neutral, weakly acidic and weakly alkaline liquids.

If it is necessary to filter warmed up and highly acidic liquids, the filters made of materials of mineral origin, such as asbestos fibers, are used. Moreover, strong mineral acids can be filtered using such materials.

Wire cloth, made of nickel or steel, is usually used, if it is necessary to filter strongly alkaline liquids.

Synthetic fabric membranes, made, for example, of vinyl chloride, are increasingly used. Such membranes are well suited for acids filtration.

As a rule, fabric membranes do not have a considerable mechanical strength, so they are placed on metal or wooden lattice. This applies not only to metal fabric membranes.

Filter presses, plate and bag filters, and Nutsche filters are the most popular discontinuous filters having a fabric membrane.

Filters with a fixed rigid membrane

Membranes made of ceramics and having a high mechanical strength indicator are frequently used for filtration.

Typically, filters, having porous filter plates, are manufactured as vacuum filters, and, more rarely, as Nutsche filters, operating under pressure. Such plates are fixed by strong mastic, resistant to chemical action. Filter area of devices of this type can reach 14 m2.

Fabric filters for gas purification

Fabric filters are the most commonly used in industry and other spheres of human activity. As their name indicates, fabric is used as a filter surface material in them. While in operation, filter cake (dust) accumulates on the membrane (surface), which also provides a high degree of gas purification.

Filtration purity is determined by fabric characteristics, which depends directly on the size of pores. According to these indicators, fabric filters for gas purification are divided into:

  • cotton filters. They are the most simple and cheap, but inefficient at the same time. Such fabrics have a fine surface which is totally non-resistant to moisture. That is why filtration of wet gases with an admixture of water vapors is not possible through cotton filters. Also, such filters have a low thermal (up to 150ºC) and chemical resistance;
  • wool. Such fabrics are quite expensive, but have high strength and physical stability. Their average service life is 12-16 months. However, they are not very resistant to temperature (up to 170ºC) and they are completely unstable to acids action;
  • synthetic (Dacron and Nitron) are very durable and elastic fabrics, and they are very resistant to chemical action. But they cannot be used at high temperatures, since fabrics sintering occurs at 180ºC;
  • glass (of silica fibers). Such filters can be used at gas temperatures of up to 800-900ºC, they have longer service life and a good chemical resistance, but they are subject to rapid wear as a result of coarse particles action;
  • felt. Such filters are highly resistant, and show excellent filtration efficiency, but lose their properties completely after contacting with water. Filtration of wet gas through felt is impossible.

Filtration efficiency increases to a certain limit, if fabric surface is covered with dust particles. Still, any filter needs periodic cleaning. Thereafter, the efficiency decreases again, but to a lesser degree than that of an entirely new filter. The table below presents data allowing to evaluate the filtration efficiency before and after regeneration (fabric cleaning).

Filter fabric regeneration

Regeneration (cleaning) of filter surface can be conducted in two ways. Mechanical action on the fabric surface, freeing it from dust, presents the first variant. Shaking, vibration, sound waves, abrupt change in the flow of filtered gas, etc. can be applied here. Filter backblowing with purified gas presents the second variant. Both methods are commonly used to enhance efficiency of fabric filters regeneration in filter machines.

Should a bidding take place, we will collect and prepare all the documents required for the participation, conclude all the necessary contracts for the supply of your equipment, as well as register the goods (fabric filters) and conduct customs clearance procedures. We will also register a certificate of transaction (Passport of Deal) required for all foreign trade contracts in the foreign currency control department of the authorized Russian bank so that currency transaction could be effected. If required, our company will implement an equipment spacing project in order to integrate your equipment into the existing or newly built production plant.
